How to Be More Decisive

1.  There are no bad decisions

First, understand that there are no bad decisions. Every decision you make, whatever the outcome, provides feedback. This feedback can provide valuable lessons.

2.  Have a decision guideline

People have a hard time making decisions because they don’t want to regret their choices. Using a “decision guideline” is one of the best ways to learn how to be more decisive and to minimise your chances of regret.

Ask yourself, “What do I hope to achieve from this decision?” This will make sure the decisions you make are aligned with your goals.

My decision guideline has certainly helped me discover how to be more decisive. It consists of:


  • Which decision will save me the most time/money?
  • Which will allow me to get closer to my goals?
  • If I choose the wrong option, which decision can easily be reversed?
  • Which requires a long term commitment?

Your own goals will determine your own decision guidelines.

 3.  Set a time limit

Set yourself a deadline to make a decision within. It doesn’t matter which option you choose, as long as you make a decision. Decisiveness beats indecisiveness 100% of the time.

 4. Trust yourself

Pay close attention to what your gut is telling you, and act on it.

Acting on gut instinct allows you to trust yourself in whichever decision you make.

 5.  Make small decisions quickly

Some decisions you have to make are trivial, such as, “Should I order the fish or meat for dinner?” Some are large, such as, “Should I take a job in another city?”

The trivial decisions aren’t important – the food you order, however delicious or disgusting it may taste, makes no real difference to your life.

Making trivial decisions quickly, strengthens your decision making process, giving you more time to dedicate to the bigger decisions, which can understandably require more time.

 6.  Act as if

One of the best ways to learn how to be decisive is to start to act as if you are a decisive person. Visualize yourself as a confident decisive person, who is able to make even the most complex decisions with ease. After enough practice, being decisive will become second nature.

 7.  Ask a friend

When you feel you need a different point of view or want to feel more secure in your decision, it is time to ask a friend.

Talking about the decision will provide greater clarity, and will help you gain a different perspective, making it easier to make a decision.
