Following your passion can be a tough thing. But figuring out what that passion may be can be even more elusive.
Many people have discovered their passion and are living it on a daily basis. You might even know someone who is “living the dream.” Have you ever noticed how they seem to smile and laugh more than the average person? It is no coincidence.
Using the internet as a platform, I want to help people to live their passion.
Not knowing what to do with one’s life is of the most common problems shared by people from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life.
After reading this guide, you will no longer say, “I don’t know what I to do with my life.”
1. What are you good at?
While I or anyone else is in no position to tell you that you can’t do something, it is a good idea to follow a passion that you are good at. If you want to be a musician but have never picked up a guitar, it is unlikely that you can make a living from music.
Have you always been a good speaker, writer, teacher, friend, organiser etc? Spend at least 30 minutes writing down everything you feel that you are good at to have a better idea of what you enjoy and were born to do.
2. What excites you?
You may get excited by something you do outside of work – a hobby, a part-time job. You may get excited by something you do at work – a small aspect of your job. Or you may get excited by something you haven’t done in awhile.
Again, you need to think about this for 15-30 minutes and write it down – don’t worry this is all leading somewhere!
3. What do you enjoy reading about?
Each week, whether it is online or in print, which topics do you find yourself reading about for hours at a time? Which blogs do you follow? Which section of the bookstore do you head towards as soon you enter? Again, write this down, even if you only enjoy reading GQ or Vogue each week.
4. What do you secretly dream of becoming?
In your mind, you may have a dream job that you wish you could do – an artist, an architect, a novelist, a designer, an entrepreneur. But some self-doubt, some fear, has held you back leading you to dismiss the idea.
No matter how unrealistic your dream job sounds, write it down.
5. Read over your list
Now you have a list, pick the one thing from the list that excites you the most. Find as much information as you can on it. Read up on it. Talk to successful people in the field. Make a list of things you need to learn. A list you need to improve on. The skills you need to master.
6. Give it a shot
Start to do the thing you have chosen. You can do it in the privacy of your home, or you can let the whole word know what you are doing. Either way – it doesn’t matter, as long as you take the most important step – action. Start writing up your business plan, start working on what could be the next Great American Novel, start painting or writing music etc.
Make sure that you pay attention to how you feel doing it – is it something that gets you excited, something you look forward to, something you love to share with the world?
7. Narrow things down
You do not have to pick just one of the things on your list – pick 3-5 instead. Then follow step 6 all over again for each one. Once you have taken a shot at the things that interest you, you need to ask yourself a few questions:
-Which one gets you the most excited?
-Which one will people pay you for?
- Which one can you see yourself doing for years to come?
8. Eliminate your fears
For most people, self doubt and the fear of failure are the biggest obstacles standing in the way of success. You therefore need to face those fears and banish them from your life. This can be done by following a five step process:
1. Acknowledge the fear instead of ignoring/denying it
2. Write it down (this helps externalise the fear for some people)
3. Feel the fear, and realise that it is okay to feel this emotion
4. Ask yourself, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’
5. Prepare to follow your passion, and then do it
9. Find time
If you feel as if you can’t find the time to pursue your passion – make time!
Knowing that this is one of the biggest changes which you can make it your life, will give you the means to find time which you think isn’t there. This might mean waking up earlier, doing it during lunch or after work, staying in instead of socialising. Just do whatever it takes to find time.
10. How to make a living doing it
Making a living from your passion does not happen overnight. It could take months or even years. But if you are enjoying yourself, seem to be smiling more, and can find a way to pay the bills whilst pursuing your passion, you should be okay with having to wait.
There are several ways to make money, including, freelance work, creating eBooks, writing a blog and selling advertising.
By following this advice, I sincerely hope that you will never have to say “I Don’t Know What to Do with My Life” again. No one said that it would be easy – the most worthwhile things in life never are – but it is entirely possible. All it takes is some soul searching, reflection, courage and the determination to succeed.
